The Pope, The Prophet and the Arabian Peninsula Much was recently made of Pope Francis’ visit to the United Arab Emirates. While this is an important step forward for religious freedom in the region it should be noted that it took place in the UAE. A place overwhelmingly occupied by foreigners. In fact, most of those attending mass during his visit were not Arabs at all but expatriate Filipino workers. The ‘big fish’ on the Arabian Peninsula, Saudi Arabia, was entirely unaffected by all of this. In fact, there is not a single legal church in the country (which is deeply ironic since Saudi Arabia sponsors the building of mosques all around the world). The shocking reality is that the Saudi authorities believe that their ban on non-Muslim places of worship follows the wishes of the ‘prophet’ Muhammad who is believed to have expelled all Christians and Jews from the peninsula just before his death. Here is the relevant tradition (hadith) “Umar heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslims…” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 4366) One wonders whether Pope Francis will discussed this complete denial of the principle of freedom of religion with his hosts during his visit. Call me cynical, but somehow I doubt it.
Il Papa, il Profeta e la penisola arabica
Molto è stato recentemente fatto della visita di Papa Francesco negli Emirati Arabi Uniti. Mentre questo è un importante passo in avanti per la libertà religiosa nella regione, si dovrebbe notare che si è svolto negli Emirati Arabi Uniti. Un posto occupato in modo schiacciante da stranieri. In effetti, la maggior parte di coloro che partecipavano alla messa durante la sua visita non erano affatto arabi, ma espatriati lavoratori filippini.
Il "pesce grosso" nella penisola arabica, l'Arabia Saudita, non è stato affatto influenzato da tutto ciò. In realtà, non c'è una sola chiesa legale nel paese (che è profondamente ironica dal momento che l'Arabia Saudita sponsorizza la costruzione di moschee in tutto il mondo). La realtà scioccante è che le autorità saudite credono che il loro divieto di luoghi di culto non musulmani segua i desideri del "profeta" Maometto, che si ritiene abbia espulso tutti i cristiani e gli ebrei dalla penisola poco prima della sua morte.
